There is no formal enrollment application, admission, or enrollment process for the MicroMasters Program Credential. In order to enroll in the SCM MicroMasters program, learners should simply enroll in courses as they are available.
MicroMasters course enrollments are open to anyone, anywhere with an internet connection. There are no pre-requisite courses or undergraduate degrees required to enroll. However, the SCM MicroMasters courses feature graduate-level, analytical coursework, and so learners are strongly recommended to have a solid grasp of algebra, probability, and statistical concepts, along with curiosity and the willingness to learn. Please refer to the Suggested Preparation Courses section of this article for more information. The Key Concepts taught in SCM MicroMasters courses are also available here (pdf).
In order to successfully complete the SCM MicroMasters Program and earn the Program Credential, learners must complete all five content courses (SC0x-SC4x) and the Comprehensive Final Exam course (CFx) on the Verified (Paid) enrollment track. For learners purchasing courses individually, they should enroll in courses on the Audit track, for free, and then upgrade to the Verified track by submitting payment. For learners purchasing the Program Bundle, they should join their preferred session of each course directly from their edX Dashboard.
To upgrade to the Verified enrollment track for an SCM course, you must either submit payment for the course (if purchasing courses individually) or join the course session from your edX Dashboard (if purchasing the Program Bundle) before the Verification (Payment) Deadline for that course session.
For SC0x, the Verification (Payment) Deadline is 21 days before the scheduled release of the Final Exam, near the end of the course session. For SC1x, SC2x, SC3x, and SC4x, the Verification (Payment) Deadline is the end of the third week of the course session. For the CFx, the Verification (Payment) Deadline is about 30 days after the scheduled start of the course session and about 2 weeks before the examination becomes available.
Suggested Preparation Courses:
Please note, the courses suggested here are not required to pursue or complete the MicroMasters credential, learners choosing to take these courses need not submit payment to take them as a Verified Learner. The SCM MicroMasters courses do not require any specific courses, but learners are assumed to possess proficiency with certain knowledge and skills. Two different types of courses are available to provide this knowledge: courses offered on edX and courses offered on MIT Open Courseware. The edX courses are live, with live discussion forums and TA’s to answer questions. They are instructor-led and occur during specific runs of time. The OpenCourseWare(OCW) courses are archived, so they are self-paced and available at any time but do not offer live support such as discussion forums or support from TAs.
While the SCM MicroMasters team has not officially prepared or endorsed any courses or materials for learners to prepare for the program's courses, many freely-available online courses are suitable for learning the required knowledge and skills. The MicroMasters Support Team has gathered a short list of online courses and collections of course material that we can recommend to learners.
Remember: Learners are not required to take any of the following courses! No specific courses are pre-requisites for any SCM MicroMasters course or the program overall. Rather, certain knowledge and skills are pre-requisites for the courses. These resources are offered as options to acquire or refresh the knowledge and skills required by the program’s courses. None of the resources listed below need to be paid for—all are either free or have a free option.
Presented below are two different types of resources:
- Courses offered on MITx Online: these are live courses, with live discussion forums and TAs to answer questions. However, they may be instructor-led and/or may only be available during specific time periods. These courses may not always be available when desired
- Courses offered on the MIT Open Learning Library (OLL): these are interactive online courses created from select OCW course collections, providing opportunities to learn at your own pace while engaging with problems and providing instant feedback on coursework. OLL courses do not offer live support such as discussion forums or support from TAs, but the courses are self-paced and available at any time
- Courses offered on MIT Open Courseware (OCW): these are collections of course materials from residential MIT courses, so they are not formatted as interactive online courses in the same way that the edX.org or MITx Online courses are, and do not offer live support such as discussion forums or support from TAs. However, the material is archived, so these courses are self-paced and available at any time
For learners without a strong knowledge of calculus:
- MITx Online: Differential Calculus Program (Collects Calculus 1A, 1B, and 1C courses)
- OLL: Calculus 1A: Differentiation
- OLL: Calculus 1B: Integration
- OLL: Calculus 1C: Coordinate Systems & Infinite Series
- OCW: Single Variable Calculus
- OCW: Multivariable Calculus on MIT Open Courseware
For learners without a strong knowledge of linear algebra:
- OLL: Linear Algebra
- OCW: Linear Algebra (In-Depth)
For learners without familiarity with statistics and probability concepts:
