While completing the SDS MicroMasters Program Credential from MITx is a significant achievement and demonstrates your proficiency in statistics and data science, it does not guarantee admission to any Pathway Programs, including any IDSS Graduate programs at MIT. Admissions decisions for graduate programs, including the IDSS programs, are administered by their admissions teams, and consider multiple factors beyond the MicroMasters program credential.
In general, your performance in the MicroMasters Program courses will be one of the most important factors in admissions decisions, as it demonstrates your preparation in statistics and data science fundamentals and your capability to handle graduate-level coursework. However, admissions committees evaluate applicants based on a holistic review, taking into account various criteria such as academic background, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, research experience, and fit within their specific graduate program.
MITx has partnered with a number of universities across the globe—including MIT—to offer pathways from the SDS MicroMasters Program to a graduate degree.
Pathways at MIT
MIT does not currently offer a pathway from the SDS MicroMasters Program to a Master’s degree, but SDS MicroMasters Program Credential holders are invited to apply for admission to the MIT Doctoral Program in Social and Engineering Systems (SES), offered through the MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS).
Applicants admitted to the SES program can expect that their MicroMasters program coursework will help prepare them for the SES core classes, and in many cases fulfill requirements within the SES program's curriculum. For more detailed information on the MIT SES Doctoral Program, including the admissions process and requirements, it is recommended to visit the official program website at: https://idss.mit.edu/academics/ses_doc/.
Pathways at Other Institutions
Many other Institutions offer pathways from the SDS MicroMasters Program to a Master's Degree. At these Institutions, Pathway program admissions teams manage and administer their own admissions systems. While the MicroMasters program credential is a valuable credential which strengthens your application, the final admission decision rests with the admissions committee, which considers a range of factors in addition to the MicroMasters program completion.
- For more information about the Pathways from the SDS MicroMasters Program Credential to a graduate degree, including a list of participating institutions, see the SDS Pathways to a Graduate Program page
Institutions not listed on the SDS MicroMasters Program's Pathways page are not required to recognize the credential as equivalent to or interchangeable with graduate credits. Learners interested in a graduate program at an institution not currently listed as a pathway are encouraged to have a staff or faculty member from the program connect with MITx at mitx.micromasters@mit.edu. We would love to hear about your interest and possibly build a credit pathway with the institution.
