About 14.310x and 14.310Fx
About the Content Course: 14.310x Data Analysis for Social Scientists
This course is now offered via the MITx Online Platform, not the edX.org Platform. The Content Course covers the methods for harnessing and analyzing data to answer questions of cultural, social, economic, and policy interest. The Content Course must be completed before the Assessment Course.
The Content Course should be taken on the Audit track, for free. SDS MicroMasters learners do not need to pay to upgrade the Content Course and do not need to take its Final Exam—SDS learners pay to upgrade the Assessment Course instead, which hosts the SDS Exam.
SDS learners must achieve a Total Course Score of at least 15% in the Content Course. This corresponds to half of the maximum Total Course Score possible without taking the Content Course's Final Exam (30%).

About the Assessment Course: 14.310Fx Data Analysis for Social Scientists—Assessing Your Knowledge
This course is offered via the edX.org Platform. The Assessment Course comprises only an exam, which tests the knowledge and skills you learned in the Content Course.
Only learners who have first completed the Content Course are eligible to take the Assessment Course. You must achieve a Total Course Score of at least 15% in the Content Course.
However, while a minimum score in the Content Course is required to take the Assessment Course, only the Course Score you achieve in the Assessment Course's Exam determines whether you pass the course and receive the Course Certificate.
Enrollment for 14.310Fx functions differently than most courses, and learners cannot enroll themselves in the Assessment Course directly.

Do SDS Learners Need to Pay for the Content Course?
You do not need to pay to upgrade your course enrollment for the Content Course, 14.310x Data Analysis for Social Scientists. You should only pay for the Content Course if you are also planning to pursue the other MITx MicroMasters Program that it belongs to—Data, Economics, and Design of Policy (DEDP).
You must pay to upgrade your course enrollment for the Assessment Course, 14.310Fx Data Analysis in Social Science—Assessing Your Knowledge. If you do not upgrade to the Verified/Certificate (Paid) enrollment track in 14.310Fx, you will not be able to take the exam, and cannot earn the Course Certificate towards your SDS MicroMasters Program Credential.
What is the Schedule of Course Availability for the Content Course and the Assessment Course?
The Content Course, 14.310x, is offered more frequently than its Assessment Course, 14.310Fx. The Content Course runs three times per year, in the Spring (from January-April) Summer (May-August), and Fall (September-December) semesters. For more information about the upcoming Schedule of Course Availability for 14.310x, please see the DEDP MicroMasters Program's Upcoming Dates page
The Assessment Course runs once or twice per year, like the other SDS MicroMasters courses. Refer to the SDS Upcoming Dates page for the most up-to-date information about SDS Course Availability.
The different availability for these two courses means that is is possible to take the Content Course in a semester not immediately followed by a session of the Assessment Course. This is allowed, though the SDS Team generally encourages learners to take the Content Course during a semester with an Assessment Course session immediately following—or at least during the same year—so that the knowledge and skills are as fresh as possible.
