You are free to unenroll from a DEDP course session on the MITx Online platform at any time. However, the unenrollment process will differ slightly depending on your enrollment track for that session, and the consequences of unenrolling will differ depending on when you do so. Please carefully review the following information.
- How To Unenroll From a Course Session
- WARNING
- What Happens When You Click "Unenroll"?
- How Do I Request A Refund If I Paid For the Course Session?
- Consequences of Unenrolling From a Course Session
Please Note: If you considering whether to unenroll from a DEDP course session in which you are enrolled on the Audit (free) track, and you plan to take the course again in a future semester, you are welcome to remain enrolled—even if you don't plan to participate in the current course session actively. The DEDP program allows and encourages learners to take the online courses as many times as they wish. You are free to get a head-start on learning the course content at your own pace with any time you have available now, and when the course session ends, you will retain access to the Archived course material. It is important to note, though, that individual coursework scores cannot be transferred from one course session to another, so you will need to redo all of the coursework in the future course session.
How To Unenroll From a Course Session
To unenroll from a course session, navigate to your MITx Online Dashboard, find the course session you wish to unenroll from, click the options button (⋮) in the top right of that course's box, and click "Unenroll".
If you are eligible for a refund for the course session you are unenrolling from, please contact Customer Support for assistance before you unenroll. See the How Do I Request A Refund section of this article for more information.
The unenroll option may be used at any time—before a course session has started, after the session has started but before the enrollment deadline, after the enrollment deadline but before the session ends, and after the end of a course session.
WARNING:Be careful to select the correct course session. If you're enrolled in more than one session of a course, you will see more than one course box with the same name on your Dashboard. It can be easy to accidentally unenroll from a session you didn't intend to—and it may not be possible to re-enroll in sessions you accidentally unenroll from.
Be sure to double-check the course status ("Starts" for sessions that have not yet started, "Active" for sessions currently running, or "Ended" for sessions that ended in the past) and date listed for a session you plan to unenroll from. |
What Happens When You Click "Unenroll"?
When you click the "Unenroll" menu option for a course session, you will see a confirmation popup, asking you if you are sure.
- If you are unenrolling from a course session on the Audit (free) track:
- ...with an Enrollment Deadline in the future, the confirmation popup will say "You won't be able to re-enroll after <Enrollment Deadline>"
- ...with an Enrollment Deadline that has already passed, the confirmation popup will say "You won't be able to re-enroll"
- If you are unenrolling from a course session on the Verified/Certificate (Paid) track:
- You will see the same warning about when/if you will be able to re-enroll in the course session
- You will also see a note that "You are enrolled in the certificate track for this course"
Here is an example of the full unenrollment confirmation popup, for a course session whose enrollment is closed, and for which the enrollment track was Verified/Certificate (Paid).
How Do I Request A Refund If I Paid For the Course Session?
If you submitted payment for a DEDP Course Session to upgrade to the Verified/Certificate (Paid) enrollment track, and you wish to request a refund, you must be eligible to receive a refund and you must reach out to Customer Support within the refund eligibility window.
Please include the following information along with your refund request:
- Your full name
- The email address associated with your MITx Online Account
- The full title and start date of the DEDP course session you wish to receive a refund for
After confirming your information and refund eligibility, we will perform the necessary steps to complete your refund. If you wish to unenroll yourself from the course session at this point, you may do so using the instructions above. You may also choose to remain enrolled in the course session on the Audit track—simply do not unenroll from the course session.
If you request a refund outside of your refund eligibility period, you will not receive a refund of the course fee. You may choose to either remain enrolled in the course session or unenroll yourself from it. If you wish to sit for the course's Proctored Exam or earn its MicroMasters Course Certificate, you must re-enroll in a future session of the course and submit payment of the course fee again.
Consequences of Unenrolling From a Course Session
If you unenroll from a course session, you will immediately lose all access to that course session's courseware—you will not receive Archived access to that course session when the session closes.
If you unenroll from a course session and later wish to re-enroll in the same session, you may not be able to do so. If the enrollment deadline for a course session has closed, it will not be possible for you to re-enroll for the course session that you have just left. Generally, this means that you would need to enroll in a future course session instead.
If you complete some of the coursework in a course session before unenrolling, and you later re-enroll in a future session of that course, you will need to re-complete all of the coursework—including any you completed during your aborted session—in order for that work to count towards your Course Score. Each offering (session) of a course is assessed independently. Neither individual coursework, individual coursework scores, nor course payments are transferable across course sessions.
However, if you feel that you were unenrolled from a course session in error—for instance, if you accidentally unenrolled yourself—please reach out to Customer Support for assistance as soon as possible.
